Mmegi, BotswanaIn Gaborone doctors and nurses are being sacked with alarming regularity from the notorious Princess Marina Hospital. 2 nurses supposed to be working in Casualty are demoted for neglecting an emergency patient who was brought to the hospital in the middle of the night. While the government spends millions of Pula on the development of other not so essential services, hospital facilities for the poor remain abysmal. The press is full of reports of cases of negligence and incompetence by hospital staff and public confidence is low. Francistown mayor Igbal Ibrahim complains about shortage of staff and inadequate facilities at the new Nyangabgwe Hospital. Speaking at the official opening of a health seminar in Francistown over the weekend the mayor also criticised doctors and nurses for neglecting patients. He said that this sloppiness was due to the lack of supervision at the hospital by senior staff. However this does not appear to alarm the rich and powerful, who can still buy the best health care in Johannesburg. |
